As part of the annual meetings of the World Customs Organization (WCO) in Brussels, the World BASC Organization (WBO) participated in the sessions of the Private Sector Consultative Group (PSCG), and in the Annual Dialogue with the WCO Policy Commission (PC).
Since 2007, BASC has been an active member of the PSCG, a strategic platform that advises the WCO Secretary General and Member Customs administrations on key issues related to trade facilitation, Customs cooperation, and innovation, from the perspective of the private sector.
Representing WBO at the meetings were Oscar Sánchez, president of the Board of Directors; Erik Moncayo, international president; and Suzanne Lemaitre, executive director. BASC’s participation in the WCO meetings reaffirms its commitment to building a more secure, transparent, and sustainable international trade environment. It also underscores its value as a trusted partner, contributing knowledge, experience, and concrete proposals to strengthen public-private cooperation and support the global modernization of Customs administration.
Throughout the PSCG sessions, on the 23rd and 24th of June, delegates discussed critical topics including enhanced collaboration with the WCO, the 20th anniversary of the PSCG, internal governance, the strengthening of regional consultation mechanisms, and emerging trade challenges such as digitalization, sustainability, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.
One of the key highlights of the meetings was the official announcement of the new leadership of the Regional Private Sector Group (GRSP) for the Americas and the Caribbean, now chaired by Erik Moncayo. This transition, formalized before PSCG members, reinforces the regional voice of the Latin American and Caribbean private sector within the WCO. Moncayo succeeds Alfonso Rojas, representative of ASAPRA/CARGODEC, to whom WBO, on behalf of the GRSP, presented a commemorative plaque recognizing his outstanding leadership from 2019 to 2025 and his instrumental role in strengthening regional coordination and the development of the group.
On June 25, WBO participated as a permanent observer in the session of the WCO Policy Commission, a high-level forum that brings together senior representatives from WCO Member Customs administrations. During this session, the PSCG submitted a set of proposals aimed at strengthening its partnership with the WCO, including the adoption of a new Code of Ethics, performance review mechanisms, and enhanced coordination with Regional Private Sector Groups.
Through its engagement in these forums, BASC represents the voice of over 4,600 certified companies across 17 countries in the Americas, advocating for modern, inclusive Customs policies rooted in public-private collaboration.
World BASC Organization extends its gratitude to the World Customs Organization for fostering ongoing dialogue and cooperation with the private sector—cornerstones for more inclusive and effective Customs governance. WBO also reaffirms its commitment to advancing a more secure, efficient, and resilient international trade environment, in alignment with the WCO’s modernization agenda and the collective efforts of its 186 Member administrations to navigate today’s dynamic global trade landscape.
